Where’s Mordor?

Where’s Mordor?

I might be in a minority here, but one of my favorite features of NerdNav is knowing how to get from one fantasy location to another, but in the real world.

Let me explain. NerdNav allows you to pretend that you’re in a fantasy location (lets say Hobbiton for example) and then you can see where other fantasy locations are relative to you. While the augmented fantasy display is cool I often find myself in map mode comparing journeys from different parts of the world.

Let me explain the explanation. Lets select a journey – say Hobbiton to Mount Doom. If my current location in South Wales is Hobbiton, then Mount Doom is off the coast of Italy. Are you with me?

The route from my house to Mordor is mostly through France.

Here’s the same journey in various parts of the world. Given that you’re heading in a southeasterly direction it helps if you’re not on an east coast. If so, you’re going by boat.

From Rime, Mt Doom would be just outside Cairo in Egypt.

From Los Angeles, Mt Doom would be the city of San Luis Potosí in Mexico
